Trump’s war on Huawei spreads through Africa
The US Export-Import Bank announced a $99.6mn loan to Africell in Angola to finance American and European network technology, part of the Trump administration’s effort to counter Huawei overseas. Five days later, the US International Development Finance Corporation approved an equity investment in WIOCC Group, which operates digital infrastructure across 30 African countries. Counterpoint Research estimates Huawei supplies about 52% of Africa’s 5G infrastructure.
Why it matters: This matters for the theme of US-China competition, showing how Washington is using public finance to counter Huawei's dominance in African telecoms.
