Amnesty International accuses AFC/M23 of abuses against miners in North and South Kivu

Amnesty International accused the AFC/M23 armed group of summary executions, torture, forced labour and forced recruitment in mines it controls in eastern DRC. The organisation documented the summary execution of 18 artisanal miners at Rubaya and Lomera, and reported that gold and coltan were illegally transported to Rwanda. The AFC/M23 and Rwandan authorities did not respond to Amnesty's requests.

Why it matters: This bears on the theme of conflict minerals, as the report links armed-group abuses to the illicit export of gold and coltan to Rwanda.
