Japan's PM says talks on ending Hormuz crisis should include countries that depend on strait
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said talks on ending restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz should include regional countries, nations that depend on it, and the International Maritime Organisation, and called for free and safe navigation to be restored without additional charges. Japan normally obtains about 93 per cent of its imported crude oil via the strait. Iran has presented the US with a road map to end the conflict that includes a regionwide ceasefire and the gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Why it matters: The dispute over the strait is an energy-security issue because the route normally carries about 20 million barrels of crude oil and petroleum products daily.
