India’s Semiconductor Journey: Old Designer, New Producer
The fifth SEMICON India closed on September 19 in New Delhi, featuring over 600 exhibitors. In July 2026, the government approved Semicon 2.0, the second phase of the India Semiconductor Mission, with an outlay of around $13 billion. India hosts about 20 percent of the world’s chip design talent but still imports more than 90 percent of its chipmaking equipment.
Why it matters: India’s semiconductor push under ISM 2.0 is shaped by geoeconomics, as global de-risking and US-China tensions drive foreign investment into India as a politically safe supply-chain node.
