Shell to Double LNG Canada Plant in Multibillion-Dollar Plan
Shareholders in the Shell Plc-led LNG Canada venture approved a second phase of the project in Kitimat, British Columbia, which will boost capacity to 28 million metric tons a year. The expansion is expected to draw about $23 billion of investment, according to the Canadian government, and is slated to start commercial operations in the early 2030s. The decision follows the Iran war and the near-closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which have tightened global energy markets and led LNG importers to seek supplies beyond the Middle East.
Why it matters: The approval expands non-Middle Eastern LNG supply at a moment when energy security concerns are redirecting Asian importers away from Persian Gulf volumes.
