Eritrea Severs Diplomatic Ties with Ethiopia After Addis Ababa Orders Closure of Embassy in Asmara

Ethiopia ordered the closure of its embassy in Asmara and declared 10 Eritrean diplomats persona non grata, giving them 48 hours to leave. Eritrea's foreign ministry said it had no option but to reciprocate in kind and sever all diplomatic ties with Ethiopia. Ethiopia also declared an Egyptian diplomat persona non grata, and Egypt responded by declaring an Ethiopian embassy counsellor persona non grata.

Why it matters: The diplomatic rupture and reciprocal expulsions intensify the conflict in the Horn of Africa and risk drawing in neighbouring states.
