Centre fortifies India’s AI mission with Sovereign Compute Pool amid rising GPU costs
The Centre is adding 10,000 GPUs of computing capacity to a government-controlled AI ecosystem, working with C-DAC to install 3,000 GPUs and finalising an agreement with the UAE for an 8-exaflop AI supercomputer to be deployed in India. The supercomputer, developed through Abu Dhabi-based G42 and Cerebras with C-DAC and the Mohamed bin Zayed University of AI, will be owned by the Indian government as a gift from the UAE government. The India AI Mission currently has access to about 30,000 GPUs against commitments of 45,000, with several private providers unable to deliver pledged capacity amid rising equipment costs, and the government has not yet decided GPU pricing and remains in the RFP stage.
Why it matters: It illustrates the technology theme in the briefing, as governments treat AI compute capacity as strategic infrastructure to be owned or controlled rather than procured only from private providers.
