Kenya: Dangote mega-refinery "will make much of East Africa" self-sufficient
Aliko Dangote laid the foundation stone of a new mega-refinery at Lamu, Kenya, on Wednesday 30 September; it is expected to open by 2030. Benjamin Augé, an associate researcher at the French Institute of International Relations, said the project would not make Africa self-sufficient in fuel but could make a large part of East Africa self-sufficient. He put African consumption at around five million barrels per day, said the refinery's 700,000 barrels per day would cover at least 20% of it, and said almost all the crude would be imported from outside Africa, most probably from the Gulf or Asia.
Why it matters: The project bears on the briefing's energy theme, since it concerns refining capacity and the sourcing of crude supply in East Africa.
