China’s LinkedIn Espionage Is Only Getting More Advanced

The member states of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance published a joint bulletin on China’s use of professional networking sites such as LinkedIn for online espionage. Spies from China’s Ministry of State Security have approached tens of thousands of U.S. and NATO government staffers, military personnel and academics, using generative AI to tailor messages to each target’s resume and expertise. On June 10, the FBI seized 13 web domains used by Chinese intelligence agents to lure targets on LinkedIn and other networking sites.

Why it matters: The article treats China’s LinkedIn recruitment as a long-running counterintelligence and cyber-espionage problem for the United States and its allies, and proposes government-industry cooperation modelled on anti-fraud efforts.
