Oil tanker hit by projectile off Qatar; reports of casualties
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said on Wednesday that an oil tanker was hit by a projectile off Qatar, amid reports of casualties. A tanker sailing off Qatar's northern coast reported being struck by several projectiles, causing an unspecified number of casualties, at a distance of 51 nautical miles (94 kilometres) from the Qatari coast, and authorities are investigating; the tanker's nationality was not given. Earlier, on Tuesday, India said 12 crew members of a Panama-flagged tanker were injured when it was hit by a projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman, adding that the injured were receiving treatment in Khasab.
Why it matters: The reported strikes on tankers off Qatar and in the Strait of Hormuz bear on the briefing's maritime security theme, given the volume of energy shipments through these waters.
