UN Security Council extends arms embargo in Sudan's Darfur as US pushes for nationwide ban
The UN Security Council voted unanimously on Thursday to extend the arms embargo on Sudan's Darfur region until December 11, buying time for negotiations on a US proposal to widen the restrictions to the entire country. Washington has pushed for a nationwide embargo, while China, Russia and other council members want to keep the sanctions confined to Darfur. Massad Boulos, US senior adviser for Arab and African affairs, said Washington agreed to the short extension after consultations with its Quad partners, allies and Security Council members.
Why it matters: The vote leaves the scope of the sanctions regime unresolved, with the US seeking a nationwide embargo and China and Russia favouring Darfur-only restrictions.
