Iran Guards Say Struck Tanker Transiting Strait of Hormuz

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said their naval forces struck a tanker they described as taking an "illegal route" through the Strait of Hormuz, naming it as the LPG carrier NV Sunshine, owned by NatWit. Maritime trackers separately reported that an unknown projectile caused a fire aboard a ship off the UAE coast, which British security firm Vanguard identified as the Panama-flagged crude tanker GEM NO2. Britain's UKMTO said the ship was struck 13 nautical miles off Al Jazeera Al Hamra, with the status of the crew, damage assessment and environmental impact unknown.

Why it matters: The incident bears on the briefing's energy security theme, since around a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas passed through the strait before the war began.
