EU Adopts Record Sanctions Expansion Targeting 1.6K Russian Defense Firms and Executives
EU foreign ministers formally adopted the bloc's largest-ever expansion of its Russia sanctions blacklist, adding 826 Russian companies and 743 executives linked to the military-industrial complex. The EU also sanctioned 74 State Duma lawmakers and three members of Russia's Central Election Commission over parliamentary elections held in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories, and three people and four entities in North Korea over Pyongyang's military and economic cooperation with Moscow. The additions bring the total number of people and entities under EU sanctions over Russia's war in Ukraine to nearly 4,600.
Why it matters: The listing extends the EU's sanctions regime from individual officials to the component supply chain of Russian missile production and to third-country enablers in North Korea, widening the set of firms exposed to asset freezes and funding prohibitions.
