Iranian leader adviser defends attack on Qatar gas installations
Mohammad Mokhber, an adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, defended Tehran’s strikes on Qatar’s Ras Laffan gas complex in March, saying attacks on regional energy infrastructure formed part of Iran’s deterrence strategy. He said Iran would hit the facilities of nine countries if its power plants and petrochemical facilities were attacked. Qatar’s Defence Ministry said Iran launched five ballistic missiles at the country, four of which were intercepted, and QatarEnergy said two of Qatar’s 14 LNG production trains were damaged.
Why it matters: The strike and the stated multi-year repair timeline make energy security a central geoeconomic risk for gas-importing countries in Europe and Asia.
