Trump: Ready to meet Putin and Xi in China
US President Donald Trump said on Monday he was ready to hold a trilateral meeting with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, indicating it could take place during an anticipated visit to China in November to discuss nuclear weapons. Trump said the meeting could focus on nuclear disarmament but that he was unsure whether efforts were under way to arrange it. He also said the United States is negotiating with Russia over Tehran, renewed criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by saying it was time for someone else to negotiate on Ukraine's behalf, and said he would examine allowing Ukrainians in the US to stay under the TPS temporary protection programme.
Why it matters: The proposed trilateral meeting places nuclear arms control within great-power competition among the United States, China and Russia.
