US-Africa Week Ahead: African Union commissioner talks peace and security
African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security Bankole Adeoye wraps up a US visit with stops in Atlanta and New York after meetings in Washington, including with State Department members on 16 October. The delegation discussed conflicts in Sudan, Ethiopia and eastern DRC, engagement with juntas and the return to civilian rule in the Sahel, and upcoming elections in Nigeria, Kenya and Angola. In New York it is expected to meet the African Group at the UN and the A3 Security Council members Liberia, Somalia and the DRC, and to take part in AU-UN consultative meetings on peace operations, terrorism and Sudan, South Sudan and eastern DRC.
Why it matters: The visit makes African Union peace and security coordination with the US and UN a central item in this week's diplomacy.
