Houthi attack kills 58 at Yemen government training camp, governor says
Governor Awad al-Wazir said 58 people were killed and more than 200 injured in a Monday attack by the Houthis on a government security forces training camp in Shabwa province, with 14 others missing after the bombardment of the Al-Alam camp. Local authority sources said the Houthis launched three ballistic missiles at security forces during a training exercise, and Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group targeted the camp, which he said was run by Saudi forces. The Houthis and the internationally recognised government, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, have traded attacks since the group advanced in September toward territory near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Why it matters: The strike bears on Red Sea shipping, as the Houthis have advanced toward territory near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a shipping chokepoint at the mouth of the Red Sea.
