Rwanda tenders 200 MW floating PV, 800 MWh BESS project
Rwanda's Energy Development Corporation Limited has opened a tender for a 200 MW floating solar plant and an 800 MWh battery energy storage system at Lake Sake in the Ngoma district of Eastern province. The project is structured as an independent power producer scheme, with the selected developer entering a long-term power purchase agreement with the Rwanda Energy Group through its subsidiary, the Energy Utility Corporation Limited, as offtaker, and taking responsibility for design, supply, installation, testing, commissioning, operation and maintenance. Bidders need at least 10 years of experience in designing, constructing and managing renewable energy plants; a site visit takes place on October 23 and initial bids are due electronically by November 12.
Why it matters: The tender sits within the energy transition theme: against the 47.5 MW of operational solar that AFSIA tracks in Rwanda, a 200 MW floating plant with 800 MWh of storage would be a substantial addition to the country's generating fleet.
