QatarEnergy signs deals to buy 4 million tonnes of US gas annually
QatarEnergy concluded two long-term agreements with Cheniere to purchase up to 4 million tonnes per year of liquefied natural gas from the company's Sabine Pass facilities in Louisiana and Corpus Christi in Texas. Deliveries are due to begin in 2031 and run for 23 years until 2054, on free-on-board terms that leave shipping arrangements to the buyer. The agreements coincide with the start-up of the Golden Pass project, in which QatarEnergy holds a 70% stake, and follow a 77% year-on-year fall in Qatari LNG exports in the third quarter of 2026 amid disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Why it matters: The contracts add long-term US volumes to Qatar's supply portfolio, linking the briefing's energy security theme to the routing of LNG trade through Gulf chokepoints.
