Sudan: Protests in Army-Controlled Areas and Market Paralysis
Protests erupted on Thursday in several cities in eastern Sudan under army control over deteriorating living conditions and the collapse of the Sudanese pound. The dollar exceeded 10,000 Sudanese pounds in Thursday trading, compared with about 600 pounds before the war began on 15 April 2023, amid fuel and cooking-gas shortages. Buying and selling halted across wide sections of Sudanese markets, and traders said rapid exchange-rate fluctuations and rising transport costs exposed them to losses.
Why it matters: The protests and market paralysis show how currency collapse and war-related production losses are feeding into food security by reducing households' access to basic goods.
