The Blockade on Iran is Deepening – But Also Widening
The US naval blockade on Iran, targeting Iranian ships and ports, is described as nearly 100 percent effective. Iran has not been able to export oil for many weeks, and stocks built up before the war are exhausted or nearly run down, with the government set to lose approximately 40 percent of the revenues on which its annual budget is based. US Central Command marked 100 days since the blockade resumed on October 22 and said US forces had redirected 138 commercial vessels as of mid-month.
Why it matters: The blockade bears directly on energy security, as it has halted Iranian oil exports while land, rail and air trade routes are also being curtailed.
