Which countries have the world’s largest militaries? China leads in troops, US in air power — where does India stand?
According to 2026 Global Firepower data compiled by Visual Capitalist, China has the largest active military force, tank inventory and number of naval assets, while the United States leads in total military aircraft. India ranks among the top five countries across all four measures. The comparison covers active personnel, tanks, military aircraft and naval assets, and the personnel figures exclude reserve forces and paramilitary personnel.
Why it matters: The rankings make the military balance theme explicit by showing that leadership depends on the category measured, with China ahead in personnel, tanks and naval vessel counts and the United States ahead in aircraft and fleet tonnage.
