Batteries key to mini-grid electrification in Burkina Faso, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal
A new IRENA report assesses solar-storage mini-grids for electricity access in Burkina Faso, Mali, Nigeria, and Senegal. It finds a near-term market of 568 MW across about 42,700 settlements, serving around 21 million people. Mini-grids with batteries could serve approximately 397,270 settlements, and delivering tier 2 demand by 2030 would require about 2.25 GWh of battery storage.
Why it matters: This report addresses the theme of energy access and the role of storage in scaling renewable mini-grids in West Africa.
