Iran will declare a ‘prohibited zone’ near Hormuz in coming days: security chief

Iran's top security chief Mohsen Rezaei announced that a prohibited zone will be declared outside the Strait of Hormuz, starting from the US Navy's blockade line and including areas of the Persian Gulf. Ships entering this zone will be placed on Iran's sanctions list. Additionally, Iran will double the price of petrol for the third tier of its quota system to 10,000 tomans per litre from September 8.

Why it matters: This relates to the theme of energy security and geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments.

chokepoint maritime · sanctions export controls · great power rivalry
