In Sudan, Darfur faces its worst drought in 40 years
The Darfur region of Sudan is experiencing its worst drought since the 1980s, according to the deputy director of the World Food Programme, who said no such drought had occurred since 1984. The failure of the rainy season from June to September is causing the collapse of local agriculture and new waves of displacement in a region that already hosts 5.6 million displaced people. More than 40 percent of Sudan's population faces acute hunger, with the crisis worsened by civil war and El Niño.
Why it matters: This matters for the food security theme because the drought is deepening an already severe hunger crisis in a region affected by civil war.
