Europe’s Read of the Trump-Xi Summit
The Trump-Xi summit produced a two-month extension of the trade truce until January 2027 and activated the China-US Boards of Trade and Investment, while both sides agreed to support each other's G20 and APEC presidencies. The two leaders also discussed Iran behind closed doors and agreed publicly that Iran must not acquire a nuclear weapon. For the European Union, the summit offered no major breakthrough on rare earths and left unresolved the risk of becoming an adjustment variable in China-US competition.
Why it matters: The summit's limited stabilization leaves the European Union exposed to trade diversion and supply-chain dependence as US-China strategic competition is managed bilaterally.
