Ukraine can play a key role enabling US energy exports to Europe
Since 2025 Ukraine has moved from having no meaningful direct relationship with US LNG to becoming one of the fastest-growing purchasers of American LNG in Europe. Russian attacks on Ukraine's domestic gas production destroyed up to 60 percent of output capacity in 2025, prompting the state-owned Naftogaz to rethink its import strategy. Naftogaz has established four gateways for US LNG imports, at Poland's Świnoujście terminal, Lithuania's Klaipėda terminal, a floating terminal at Mukran in Germany, and Greece's Revithoussa terminal via the Vertical Corridor.
Why it matters: It bears on the energy theme: Ukraine's import gateways and its underground storage capacity of more than 30 billion cubic meters would give US LNG a distribution hub serving Central and Eastern Europe and support Europe's move away from Russian gas.
