Russia Attacks Ukrainian Energy Grid, Forcing Power Cuts as Winter Looms
Russia carried out a combined air campaign against Ukraine's energy grid, hitting power facilities and infrastructure around Kyiv and other regions, and Ukrainian officials said seven people were killed, among them a child. Ukraine's state grid operator Ukrenergo said it imposed emergency power cuts in Kyiv and three surrounding regions, and the air force said it intercepted 254 of 285 Russian drones deployed until early evening. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said critical infrastructure came under attack in five regions with further damage reported in another five, while Moldova's defense ministry said three drones crossed into its airspace and Romania and Poland scrambled military jets.
Why it matters: The strikes bear on the energy security theme, since damage to Ukrainian generation and grid infrastructure ahead of winter also produced spillover into neighbouring NATO states' airspace and flight operations.
