Kenya: Dangote mega-refinery construction launched in Lamu before several African heads of state

Construction of the Nigerian Dangote group's mega-refinery was launched on Wednesday 30 September at the port of Lamu, on Kenya's north-east coast. The Kenyan, Ugandan, Beninese and Togolese presidents and the Ethiopian prime minister attended the ceremony for a project aiming at 700,000 barrels of crude oil processed per day by 2030. Residents of Lamu county have filed a legal challenge against the project, and Aliko Dangote said he was not afraid of those who brought it.

Why it matters: The project bears on the briefing's energy theme, since it would link East African crude supply, refining capacity and reduced dependence on imported fuels.
