Ukraine says SpaceX Starshield restrictions disrupted military drone and reconnaissance missions
Ukrainian officials said restrictions imposed on the military satellite communications service Starshield, operated by SpaceX, caused a number of missions to fail and hindered drone operations, reconnaissance and supply on the front. Serhiy Beskrestnov, an adviser to the Ukrainian president on weapons technology, said the armed forces received no warning of the restrictions, and that they affected devices using the service while moving faster than 100 miles per hour. Officials in Ukraine's defence ministry accused SpaceX of imposing the restrictions unilaterally, saying they complicate drone missions and limit reconnaissance, logistics and signal relay.
Why it matters: The dispute illustrates the briefing's theme of defence-technology dependence, in which access to commercially operated satellite communications constrains a state's military operations.
