North-west Chad: two soldiers killed in clashes with local self-defence committee
Two officers were killed and nine soldiers wounded on 14 October in clashes in the Tibesti region, at Miski, a gold-mining area in conflict for nearly ten years over the distribution of mining revenues. The fighting opposed the Miski self-defence committee and the national brigade for the control of mining activities. The general staff called on the self-defence committee to hand over its weapons immediately, warning that failure to obey would be treated as an act of rebellion, while the committee deplored the loss of life, offered its condolences and maintained its demands, including the withdrawal of the mining brigade's coordinator and the application of the agreement signed on 20 April 2025.
Why it matters: The clashes bear on the conflict and security theme, since disputes over mining revenue in the Tibesti have repeatedly produced armed confrontation between local self-defence groups and state forces.
