Rubio seeks greater energy trade with India; eyes Venezuelan crude refining opportunities

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Mumbai and pitched for expanded energy trade and greater cooperation in refining Venezuelan crude oil. Rubio also held a trilateral meeting with UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah on energy and connectivity, and is scheduled to visit Reliance Industries’ facilities in Jamnagar. He said the two countries are close to finalising a trade agreement and are down to a few technical details.

Why it matters: The visit shows energy trade and refining capacity functioning as instruments of geoeconomic alignment between the US and India.

great power rivalry · sanctions export controls · supply chain risk
